At Arastradero this morning, I got pictures of a male HYBRID NORTHERN
FLICKER -- up the hill on the left as you go in. (Mostly gray face, and red
malar stripe; with red nape and yellow wing linings.)
Up that hill as well is a very active ACORN WOODPECKER granary tree, in
which I saw (and got pictures of) acorn storing, and also saw -- but
unfortunately didn't get good pictures of -- a pair copulating. That same
Autumn hormone burst that produces the song in thrashers, Zonos, etc around
this time? Having to do with days being the same length now as when
singing/mating begins in the Spring?
Also, lots of action from the several juvenile WHITE-TAILED KITES near the
preserve entrance -- if you look at the pictures, you'll see one of the
Kites mostly molted to first basic plumage, with red eyes, a little paler
than adults, and just a few rufous feathers in the underparts. The others
have plenty of juvenile feathering and dark to orange eyes.

(the first 8 are from this morning; the rest from other recent outings to
Baylands and Shoreline)
