I guess I asked for trouble when I decided to start our birding adventure at 8:00 AM. But 13 brave souls appreciated sleeping in! It also meant we were out until dusk getting #100!
The Gallinago Go Go's started our day at Arastradero. If you want to check out raptors this is the place to go. Between COOPER'S HAWK, SHARP SHINNED HAWK, RED TAIL HAWK, RED SHOULDER HAWK, WHITE TAILED KITE and AMERICAN KESTREL we were keeping busy. The CALIFORNIA THRASHER was also added to the list.
We then moved on to Hidden Villa. Although we missed some birds we expected here, we did observe two male RED BREASTED SAPSUCKERS locking it up bill to bill. Also had HAIRY & DOWN WOODPECKERS. We pished into view HERMIT THRUSH. Also had several FOX SPARROW, TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and BROWN CREEPERS.
Off to CCFS in Alviso to see if we could find the Canada Warbler. And with two SFBBO banders on the team we were in the gate and ready to go in no time, but no warbler was found. In fact, it was pretty quiet in this area during this early afternoon visit. Many people on the team had never had the opportunity to see the field station, so it was worth the visit.
Off to Don Edwards and we got to add BARN OWL and BURROWING OWL to the list. Soon we stopped at the new Alviso Marina where all had great views of LINCOLN SPARROWS.
At Charleston Slough things were getting serious. It was late in the day and we were still down roughly 25 species, guess you could say we were having too much fun all day! Laughing, picture taking and getting 13 people on a bird slows ya down! But at the slough we started adding ducks and learning about eclipse plumage! Julie Bryson found BLUE WINGED TEAL in the flood control basin just north of the slough. At the slough we added a PEREGRINE FALCON.
Here we were at the end of the day and no Canada Geese? How could that be!? So we headed for the Palo Alto Baylands. It was here we got our geese and added several WHIMBRELS, LONG BILLED CURLEW and BLACK BELLIED PLOVERS. Our 100th bird was a heard only CLAPPER RAIL.
Many "civilians" walked by us throughout our day and asked us what we were doing. We showed them falcons and shorebirds, ducks and pelicans. It was a good day for them, a great day for us, and it was good for the birds.
Thank you Gallinago Go Go's - your efforts will go to good use!
