[SBB] Almaden

All,

This morning 10/8/05, I spent a few hours trying to refind Ann's Northern Parula with Mike Mammoser along the east side of the Guadalupe River opposite the SCVWD pond and at nearby Almaden Lake. We had no luck with the Parula, but there were YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS everywhere. Highlights included 1 COMMON MERGANSER in Guadalupe River and 3 more on Almaden Lake, 2 SWALLOWS (either VIOLET-GREEN or TREE) flying high up to the south over Guadalupe River, and 2+ WESTERN TANAGERS, a YELLOW WARBLER, and 3 WESTERN BLUEBIRDS at the south end of Almaden Lake. An immature male MERLIN was harassing Mourning Doves and Starlings on a wire south of the footbridge at the lake inlet, before being chased off by a male AMERICAN KESTREL. Nine NUTMEG MANNIKINS were along the east side of Almaden Lake - all adults except for a single immature near a nest by the Greystone Picnic Area sign.
