Great news, Chuq! And thank you so much for managing and hosting this
list! Speaking from experience, I know it's a mostly thankless task.
Some folks seem to think that it's all automatic and perfect, that
there's no one sweating the details behind the scenes. And not many
of the bird lists seem to be hosted by individuals who also provide
the server space. There are a lot of benefits to this that may not be
fully understood by everyone.
It's a very warm feeling to be able to access the archives! (Can you
tell that I'm a bit geeky about birding lists?) One suggestion: could
the "pre-plaidworks" archives be arranged chronologically by year and
month? Or, if it's not too much trouble, in both ways? That way,
people who don't think like me and prefer the alphabetical month
approach can have their cake, too. Will there be a search function
that can look through all archives without having to go to each
month's page first?
On behalf of those who feel as grateful as I do, but don't think to
thank you, Muchisimas gracias!

I am going to be upgrading the software and moving the list to my
new host (finally). I hope the downtime will be less than 2 hours.
All list members will receive a new "welcome to the list" message
as I migrate the subscriber list. This is normal, do not panic. The
new list will live on a new domain name, plaidworks.org (instead of
plaidworks.com). The old plaidworks.com addresses will continue to
work, and this should affect you only if you filter messages on the
list address or domain (if you don't know what that means, don't
worry). The switch should be invisible to most of you.
The new server has some new features -- the archives are finally
not broken, and the links to them work. I've also installed a
system to manage a Frequently Asked Questions document, and I've
put in some of the common information for the list. You're welcome
to submit other FAQ entries via email to me, or via the new FAQ
system.
You can check out the archives here:
http://www.plaidworks.org/archives/south-bay-birds
and the new FAQ system here:

I will send out a note before I shut down the list tomorrow
evening, so you know to hold off on posting. I'll also send out a
note once the upgrade is complete. I'm going to be migrating
mailing lists over the next couple of days; once that is done and I
shut off my old server, turnaround time for postings to the list
should speed up.
