On a very cold Saturday morning with a brisk wind Jeannie and I saw
40 species of birds at Calero from the trailer parking lot and on the
lake from the levy.
Pied-billed Grebe
Double-Crested Cormorant
Great Egret
Canada Goose (200 or so. . .)
Mallard
Gadwall
Northern Shovelor
Cinnamon Teal
Green-Winged Teal
Common Goldeneye
Bufflehead
Common Merganser (including one male in alternate plumage)
Turkey Vulture
Northern Harrier (Fortini Road)
Red-tailed Hawk
Osprey (not at Calero, but on a tree top by Lake Almaden on the way)
American Kestrel (all over Fortini Road)
Wild Turkey (100+)
American Coot
Killdeer
Spotted Sandpiper
Wilson's Snipe (out in the open feeding at the inlet)
Ring-Billed Gull
Rock Pigeon
Nuttall's Woodpecker
Northern Flicker (Red)
Black Phoebe
Say's Phoebe (Fortini)
Western Scrub Jay
Common Raven
American Crow
Oak Titmouse
Bushtit
Northern Mockingbird
European Starling
Golden-crowned Sparrow
