A few highlights from the past week:
Nov. 5, at CCFS: about 3 Golden-crowned Kinglets. Another birder saw the
Plumbeous Vireo, but we weren't able to refind it.
Nov. 9, NWR EEC entrance road: an Osprey was perched in a roadside tree
where the road bends to parallel Mallard Slough.
Nov. 12, SCVWD pond on Almaden Expressway: two Peregrine Falcons still
present. (They were chasing, after which I got a nice look at the
perched juvenile; I didn't get enough of a look at the other to age it.)
Nov. 12, Almaden Reservoir: I noted 24 Wood Ducks, mixed with the more
aboundant Mallards. This was by no means a thorough count, so I'm
quite sure there were more.
Nov. 12, east end Calero Reservoir: With about 500 Canada Geese were
13 Cackling Geese. Although I picked out white neck rings only on
four of them (others may have been feeding in a way so as to obscure
it), I tend to agree with Mike Mammoser that they are all of the
Aleutian type. All had similar not-very-dark underparts coloration;
I don't think any were dark enough below or small enough for minima.
On the other hand, two of the birds, while outwardly similar, did
seem a bit larger than the rest (although I'm not sure large enough
to get into the realm of Cackling-Canada confusion). My views were
a bit too distant for adequate study of bill shapes.
Also here were 19 Common Merganswers. An Osprey and a Peregrine
Falcon flew in together (the Falcon making several dips at the
Osprey, which it evaded), landing behind the Geese. The Osprey
in fact landed in the water, where it proceded to bathe.
