[SBB] Oka Ponds 11-05-05

All,

I led my Palo Alto Adult School birding group to the Oka Ponds on Saturday for a sunny morning of birding. Nothing especially unusual was logged, but we did have our first Ring-necked Ducks of the season, as well as several American Wigeons and Wood Ducks in the fenced control ponds along Dell Avenue. As well, there was a lone Spotted Sandpiper in this area. Other nice finds were a Wilson's Snipe on "Snipe Island" along the creek beyond the bridge. Two Green Heron were located, one in pond 6 and another by the spill way near the restrooms. Probably the most exciting discovery was not a bird at all, but a Bobcat that chomped on a mouse and rested in full view of the bridge.

After completing the tour of all 6 ponds, some of us relocated to Stevens Creek Park (SCP) to search for the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. No luck with that particular bird, but plenty of Red-breasted Sapsuckers for close study. Townsend's Warbler made for a colorful end of the tour.
