While out in the backyard tonight, we were rewarded with 3 separate
waves of canada geese, the largest over 40 birds, and over 70 birds
total. they were headed from the ponds at central park in santa clara
towards the pruneridge golf course.
I mention it mostly because while it's common to have some canada
geese at the park year round, it is not common too see a battalion of
them this time of year like that. Truly rather impressive (and noisy).
Also, a quick note on the local mockingbirds. One of them, god help
me, has learned seagull. First time I've ever heard that out of a
mockingbird, and it's guaranteed to scare children and small dogs.
("mine! mine!"). there's a mockingbird nest in a large tree two
houses down, and they seem to have fledged at least one, since I've
seen the kid on the wires above the yard. I've also seen them in
multiple disagreements with the crows about wanting to visit the
nest... (and for those that remember my neighborhood was a turf war
between the mockingbirds and the blue jays in the past half dozen
years, at this point, I don't see a single jay anywhere, and haven't
seen one at all this spring -- three years ago, they had effectively
pushed the mockingbirds out of my yard).
The goldfinches seem to have fledged the kids, because activity at
the feeder has gone down to almost zero (from 20ish birds earlier).
and the chestnut-backed chickadee pair introduced a youngster to the
feeder this weekend while we were there.
Haven't seen anything particularly unusual recently. Where three
years ago we were heavy in orioles, last year, we had one pair, adn
this year, all I've seen is one partial sighting of a male, with no
sign anyone's stuck around. go figure. and not much hummingbird
activity, either.
