This morning I birded the Ogier Ponds, located along Coyote Creek near the model airplane park north of Morgan Hill. Highlights were:
1 male Great-tailed Grackle flying north over the southernmost ponds and appearing to land on one of the islands in the large pond north of the entrance road (though I could not refind it later)
1 male Greater Scaup
1 Clark's Grebe
4 female Common Mergansers
5 Wood Ducks (plus a brood of young with a female)
3 Spotted Sandpipers (including a courting pair)
1 Greater Yellowlegs
3 Snowy Egrets
1 Common Moorhen
Several broods of Pied-billed Grebes and American Coots
1 adult Great Horned Owl on nest with at least 2 very large young
single Gadwall and Cinnamon Teal
5 singing Marsh Wrens (numerous nests, though I don't know how many were active)
A bit further north, a pair of Lark Sparrows were feeding recently fledged young just east of Highway 101 near the shooting range, south of Metcalf Road.
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
