I wonder if the lack of reporting of the Hairy Woodpecker at CCFS might be
related to the placement of the mist nets. The Downy Woodpecker loves to forage
low among the shrubs and bushes. I have often seen them perched on a dry
twig or weed stalk that would be too small to support a Hairy Woodpecker. The
hairy prefers more substantial branches and I seldom see them down low.
Therefore, I wonder if a number of them might occasionally be wandering through, but
high up above the mist nets and, consequently, underreported.
