I have another picture of the mystery gull I photographed on the Baylands
duck pond Saturday. Recall, I said it was a first year Thayer's. Experts
unanimously reject this on structure -- bill wrong, head too flat -- eye
turning yellow. Mike Rogers suggests a first year Herring. Al Jaramillo
thinks primaries wrong for that, maybe Herring x Glaucous-winged.
All sensible folks, including the two above, seem to agree that attempting
definitive i.d. of problematic late first-cycle gulls from isolated photos
is a mug's game. For those attracted to mug's games...
