[SBB] GBHE Chicks Arrive

Howdy Sbbers.....

Didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but I did a quick check of the GBHE
Colony at Vasona....and I found one egg shell. Didn't hear any little ones
and herons were all hunkered down in the nests.

On my way to check the Campbell ponds, I stopped at the first parking lot in
Vasona and was thrilled to hear first then see two male Bullock's Orioles
have returned to their nesting grounds.

Over on the Dell Avenue filtering ponds were a pair of RING-NECKED DUCKS and
pairs of MALLARDS and COOTS. Upon entering the Dell Avenue entrance into
the Campbell Ponds....10-12 young DCCO were there as well as a SNOWY EGRET
standing on a nest on one of the island and to keep it company was a young (at
least one year old not quite two year old) GBHE standing on a nest....I took
pictures in the rain and will see if this heron matches up to any of the ones at
 Vasona.

Flying around the Campbell ponds were BARN and NORTHERN-ROUGH WINGED
SWALLOWS. The KILLDEER was gone and no eggs or egg shells were visible.

Today I stopped back at Vasona and found a second egg shell....and this time
heard the little one cackling....all other nests had herons way down in the
nests.....A mate dropped off food to Nest 4 that has the chicks....and once
they were fed all was quiet.....

Wishing you all good birding and my best regards,
Linda Sullivan
PS One great looking CACKLING GOOSE was sitting by the docks in Vasona....it
offered great close up views ....
