Clear blue skies promised good birding at Bald Mountain this morning. Nancy
Ruhle and I heard a Purple Finch shortly after reaching the trail on Mt.
Umunhum Rd. It was hot up there and few wildflowers were seen until the end
of the .6 mile trail where Popcorn flowers were so profuse the hills looked
snow covered. The view was stunning and even downtown San Francisco could
be seen through the light haze. At least four reservoirs can be viewed from
here and all appeared at capacity.
California Thrashers sang all along the sagebrush hillside and quite a few
were seen. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers had arrived and at least eight were heard
and a several seen. They can be found nesting in the Chamise in April and
May. Coopers Hawk, Cal. Quail, No. Flicker, Orange crowned Warblers,
Huttons Vireo and one Selasphorus were other good birds at this location.
