Yesterday I decided to take the scenic route home over Metcalf and San
Felipe Rd. The most interesting siting was a flock of 30-40 AMERICAN
PIPITS. I saw them land in a pasture and was lucky enough to find a
pull-out to stop for a look. Also seen along the way were AMERICAN
KESTREL, lot os RED-TAIL HAWKS, TURKEY VULTURES, WESTERN BLUEBIRD,
DARK-EYED JUNCO, OAK TITMOUSE, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, lots of
RED-SHAFTED FLICKER pairs both on the ground and in the trees, NUTTALS
WOODPECKER, CA. THRASHER (Voice only). Not terribly exciting, but a
beautiful drive anyway.
Sunday Toni Koenen and I checked the herons at Lake Cunningham. We
identified 3 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON nests. I believe in a week or so
there will be a lot more evidence of nesting as there were at 20 or more
BCNH's roosting on the salt brush. Later in the afternoon I noticed a
GREAT EGRET snooping around a nest sight from last year. Maybe it will
nest there again. Last year there were 4 GREG nests with babies at that
site.
PINE SISKINS continue on my sock feeder in east San Jose . Early this
week while re-filling the feeder one feisty siskin refused to budge and
I actually touched its tail before it begrudgingly hopped off to a
nearby branch.
Happy birding!
Summer Brasuel
