[SBB] Calero's Bald Eagle

Hello All -

I've already replied to Al Eisner's question on the wintering adult Bald
Eagle at Calero Reservoir; however, then I thought maybe I should send a broader
reply.

Since Calero Reservoir is not far from where I live, I often check there for
the Bald Eagle and other birds. Here are some of my observations over the
past few years.

The eagle usually arrives around the end of November to early December, and
I start watching for it in earnest around Thanksgiving time. The bird is
most reliably seen during December and January, with sightings tapering off in
February and only a very few sightings into early March. My last sighting
this year was a very brief look on March 2 as the eagle banked low over the
reservoir and headed into the cove at the southwest end of the reservoir.

It has been seen most often in the southwest section of the reservoir and
seems to have a "favorite" perch on an oak at the end of a peninsular
projection. However, the eagle has been seen in other areas of the reservoir as well.
It also seems to hang out in the southwestern cove which is not visible
from the boat ramp - fishermen have told me it has been seen there.

I and others have also seen it flying along the Alamitos Creek corridor, and
on the Calero-Morgan Hill CBC I watched it fly along McKean Rd headed for
Calero. Where it was coming from, I don't know.

Sightings of this eagle tend to be a "hit or miss" kind of thing, and while
I check the reservoir fairly often I have more "misses" than "hits". In
short, December-January seem to be the best times to look for this bird.

Regards,
