This morning at the Gate 5 area of Monte Bello an Orange-crowned Warbler was in song from the top of a live oak. First of the species I'd seen there since last summer.
A male Pileated Woodpecker made an extended open-sky flight up and out of the uppermost Stevens Creek drainage into SM County at 8AM, calling all the while.
A dozen gulls flying high and westward in a perfect V at 7:30 am were the first I'd ever seen there. I couldn't ID them through the thinning fog. Four crows heading north were also unusual for the location. A Lincoln's Sparrow remained near the pond, where I have been finding them sporadically throughout the winter.
At least ten mid-sized finches in nearby conifer tops were behaving like the crossbills I've been seeing up there, but if so they were uncharacteristically silent.
