Hello South Bay Birders-
The US Geological Survey- San Francisco Bay Estuary Field Station and the US
Fish and Wildlife Service in collaboration with PRBO Conservation Science
and San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory are currently conducting a study
examining the space use of marked (radioed and color-banded) Black-necked
Stilts and American Avocets in the S.F. Bay and how mercury in the SF bay
effects their reproductive success and survival.
Recently, some of our marked birds have moved beyond our normal search area.
In an effort to maximize our search area I am requesting that the birding
communities of the SF Bay report any marked Black-necked Stilts or American
Avocets to me ([[email protected]] before 7/15) or Scott Demers
([[email protected]]) thereafter. If anyone has seen a marked Black-necked
Stilt or American Avocet, please let us know and we will investigate.
Simply report when and where the bird was observed and if any color bands
were read. (colors include red, orange, yellow, light green, dark green,
blue ) and record what order the bands are in from top of the leg to the
bottom. Contact information for the observer would also be appreciated. Each
bird marked from this year will have three color bands on the bird's left
leg. On the bird's right leg there will be a dark green color band above a
leg radio band with an obvious radio and antennae. If you get a good look
focus on the left leg once the right leg pattern has been confirmed.
We are only interested in sightings until the middle of July and anytime
this summer. Areas of particular interest are the Suisan Bay, Petaluma and
Marin wetlands in the North Bay and anywhere in the South Bay outside of the
Alviso salt pond complexes.
Please feel free to email me with any question you may have.
Thanks in advance,
River Gates
