Perhaps all of the birds
in Monterey or San Luis Obispo counties are resident, while all of the
birds in Oregon or Washington are migratory. In between, there may well be
a mix of birds, with some migrating and some staying over. Moreover, this
mixture may very well vary from year to year as these inbetween populations
have to guess as to whether there will be sufficient food resources for
them to stay over.
I agree with this assessment, but stress that in our area there is little
coverage of poorwill habitat at night in the winter, and if their activity is
sometimes limited by hibernation or torpor then that would limit detections
even more. Perhaps of interest, a number of the winter records from Santa Cruz
Co. are from spots where the species is not known to reside during the
nesting season. What that means...I don't know. In part it may reflect spotty
knowledge of the breeding season distribution.
