There's a killdeer nest at the Palo Alto Baylands at the moment
that's extremely accessible and open to view. In fact, it's too
accessible and likely to be plundered soon by the ravens or trampled
by somebody's dog.
The nest is in the gravel on the ground adjacent to the parking area
by the windsurfing site at the far southeastern end of the road. As
you approach the parking area by the windsurfing site, there are two
rows for parking. Turn left into the first row of parking. The nest
is on your right on the gravel apron of the island in middle of the
parking area as soon as you make the turn. Someone has put several
rocks in a ring around the nest in hopes of a keeping the many people
using that area from stepping on it.
I've found I can get very a good close look out of the car window
without disturbing the nest, but anyone who tries to approach it on
foot will trigger all the usual evasive, defensive behavior.
