Good evening all.....
Today I visited Vasona for my four hour study of the Great Blue Herons. The
colony has 8 nest and 25 chicks this year.... On today's visit I was
thrilled to see that most of the chicks have fledged. About 8 chicks remain, but 6
of them left the nests and came back. I would expect that the remaining
chicks will be there for about 1-2 weeks more, and then the colony of GBHE will be
done for 2005.
One big surprise is the Great Egret with bright green lores and in wonderful
breeding plumage adding twigs to Nest 4. I am wondering if this GREG will
nest in this colony.
Since Vasona has netted off the bottom of the bridge, the Cliff Swallows are
now nesting under the walking bridge of the boat dock. A female Osprey was
flying over the lake. I also counted four GBHE fledglings on the island out
in the lake.
At home the Red-shouldered Hawk nestlings are getting big. Both now have
brown feathers with a few white fluffy feathers still on the top of their heads.
Thrashers, Junco's, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Finches, Oak Titmice,
Chickadees and Mourning Doves continue at my feeders. The Black Phoebe nest has
fledged three young...all feeding in the backyard.
Wishing you all good birding and my best regards,
Linda Sullivan
PS Had a wonderful time today showing a class of first graders the GBHE
chicks through my scope....what a treat to watch their faces!
