Now, wait a second. White Pelicans *are* special. We look forward to their
return every year. And it is always sort of a kick to be assaulted by
Forster's Terns screeching their lungs out. So they may not be unusual, but
are always fun to watch.

All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I walked out to Salt Pond A10. Nothing
special was seen on the way (four BROWN PELICANS, lots of AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, 4-5 SURF SCOTER and one EARED GREBE
in A10) but
we did notice several large flocks of sandpipers (of up to 100 birds) flying
along the Salt Ponds south of us (A7 and A8). We also noted what looked
like a flock of about 20 CASPIAN TERNS on a "beach" (box nearby) in Salt
Pond
A7. Several CATE were seen flying nearby during our "trek." A quick
check of
the Environmental Education Center revealed good numbers of Sandpipers in
New
Chicago Marsh. Unfortunately the distances were great and the air quality
poor so only a few LEAST SANDPIPERS and a GREATER YELLOWLEGS
were identified,
but things are definitely looking up.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
