I birded with Nancy Ruhle along the Alamitos Creek trail this morning. We
started at Crossview Court where an Ash-throated Flycatcher was seen
perched and a Robins nest found. We did a loop by walking north onto
Winfield and hiked up the hill across the street where we found Cal.
Thrasher, Black-headed Grosbeaks and a possible Swainsons Thrush giving a
"whit" call. An Am. Robin fledgling was being fed in an Elderberry bush.
At Almaden Lake the island was filled with roosting and nesting egrets and
herons. One Green Heron flew past. On the other side of the bridge we found
the Spotted Sandpiper, several Killdeer and 15 Common Mergansers, heads
tucked and sleeping on the rocks. It was very birdy just over the bridge
with at least 6 Black-headed Grosbeaks and 8 Bullocks Orioles. Our favorite
sight was a fledgling male BHGR perched in the open being fed by adult. A
family of Bullocks Orioles, and Violet Green Swallows were seen here. We
walked south along the creek on the residential side where some common
species were seen. At the Mazzone bridge the same 15 Common Mergansers were
swimming towards us in sparkling clear water providing views of their
feeding habits. We stopped to see the newly fledged BUOR being fed and I
showed Nancy their nest. Rough winged Swallows were flying and feeding
young in this area and more BHGR and Spotted Towhee seen.
From the bike trail I spotted a big flock of dark birds to the south
flying in big random circles. It was 20 Common Ravens, the only flock I'd
ever seen !! I checked each birds tail and found all to be wedge shaped.
Only one was heard calling. I waited a bit by my car when a Pacific-slope
Flycatcher flew in a perched low, very close to me. I'd appreciate any
comments on the Ravens.
