As usual, my group covered Almaden Lake, Edenvale Park, and
Alamitos Creek.
We failed to find the AMERICAN BITTERN at the Water Company pond, but did
enjoy a fly-by PEREGRINE FALCON, two GREEN HERONS, and the SORA that's been
there a while. In the riparian above the ponds, and very close to the count
boundary, we located small flock of NUTMEG MANNIKINS. A second group was found
in the more usual area, upstream of Almaden Lake along Alamitos Creek.
At Edenvale Park, we re-located the MERLIN found earlier in the week, and
found a female plumaged BULLOCK'S ORIOLE sitting silently in a small tree while
we recorded its vital details. One of the first sounds I heard as we entered the
park proper was the call of WESTERN TANAGER. However, there was a lot of noise
from traffic and playing children. It never re-called, so we didn't count
it.
Returning to Almaden Lake, for the daily gull love-in, we found the
usual few RING-BILLED GULLS, and several THAYER'S GULLS among the
numerous CALIFORNIA and HERRING GULLS.
In the afternoon, we worked the lower part of Alamitos Creek where, with a
flock of chickadees, a make BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER spent several minutes
responding to pishing and owls calls. An immature COOPERS HAWK was astonishingly
cooperative in a small tree next to the main path, ignoring joggers, bikers, and
ourselves as we passed under the tree.
