The Calero-Morgan Hill Christmas Bird Count was held today 12/30/05. After some post-countdown dinner followup, our preliminary species total stands at 145 (Steve Rottenborn had Horned Lark, Rock Wren, and Burrowing Owl).
All counters were quite pleased with the weather, which contra forecasts involved only minimal rain (although a fair amount of wind in the afternoon).
Highlights included:
Redhead - the continuing female at Ogier Ponds
American Bittern - at least 3
Bald Eagle - 1 at Calero Reservoir, 3 at Anderson Reservoir
Ferruginous Hawk - at least 3, including a dark morph bird in San Felipe Valley
Prairie Falcon - 4, by 3 parties
American Avocet - 2 in wetland near Cochrane as last year
Apparently only a single Long-billed Dowitcher!
hybrid Herring x Glaucous Gull - 1 at Coyote Ridge landfill
Northern Pygmy-Owl - 1 along Las Animas Road
Burrowing Owl - 1 at Coyote Ridge
Northern Saw-whet Owl - 2
Tree Swallow - 1 at Chesbro Reservoir
Barn Swallow - 1 south of model airplane skypark along Coyote Creek
American Dipper - 1
The only Brown Creepers (8) and Varied Thrushes (11) reported at the countdown dinner were from San Felipe Creek at the eastern edge of the count circle - none from the Santa Cruz Mountain side!
Orange-crowned Warbler - 1 near bike path north of Parkway Lake
Grasshopper Sparrow - 3 at Coyote Ridge
White-throated Sparrow - 1 along St Mark's Drive
Birds not on the tally sheet (new to count?):
Red Phalarope - 1 at Chesbro Reservoir
Northern Rough-winged Swallow - 1 at Chesbro Reservoir
Black-throated Gray Warbler - 1 male along Alamitos Creek south of Graystone
American Redstart - 1 continuing bird at west edge of Coyote Creek Golf Course
Bullock's Oriole - 1 fem/imm at Edenvale Garden Park
and 2 count-week Blue-gray Gnatcatchers
Species that were not found today (although several party packets have not been turned in yet):
No geese other than Canada Goose (count week Snow Goose at Anderson)
Northern Pintail
Ring-necked Pheasant
No loons of any species (count week Red-throated at Calero Reservoir)
Western Grebe (count week bird at Calero Reservoir)
Bonaparte's Gull
White-throated Swift (count week)
Red-breasted Nuthatch
House Wren
Winter Wren
Golden-crowned Kinglet
Western Tanager
PURPLE FINCH ! (missed on the San Joe count too!, seen count week)
Pine Siskin
