That's nothing. Channel 2 had full features on the Red Phalaropes on all four of their newscasts yesterday. The video footage was different each time. The weirdest was the Six O'Clock News, where the only birds they showed were Sandhill Cranes. There were also features on the Christmas Bird Count. I don't remember if they were combined with the phalarope reports, or even if they were on the same channel.

I went to Crittenden Marsh at 1:00pm yesterday, but I didn't see the Red Phalaropes. I probably mistook them for avocets. I didn't look closely at the avocets.

 

After that, I went to Shoreline Park. When I parked by Michael's, I saw a Northern Flicker. This is probably the one that Michael Mammoser reported earlier this week. The best photo ops were Anna's Hummingbirds and a very bold Great Blue Heron along the bike path near the Burrowing Owl mound, where there were two Burrowing Owls. Other raptors were a male American Kestrel, a female Northern Harrier, a White-tailed Kite, and of course, Turkey Vultures.

 

I ended the day at Byxbee Park, where everyone I saw had binoculars, and most had field guides. They were all looking for the phalaropes. We didn't find them. There were a lot of ducks: Ruddy Duck, Canvasback, American Wigeon, Greater Scaup, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Cinnamon Teal, Northern Shoveler, and a single female Hooded Merganser. There was also the usual assortment of other birds, plus Western Meadowlarks. 

 

Even though none of the birds I saw were particularly rare, I took a lot of pictures. I've uploaded a dozen this morning, and will upload several more over the next day or two.
