All,
A check of Shoreline Lake this morning 12/28/05 turned up 6 BARROW'S
GOLDENEYES, all together in the northwest part of the lake. The group
included one adult male, 3 adult females (bright orange bills with small
black tips), 1 immature male (same size as adult male, with adult male
facial crescent coming in on face and some adult-like back feathers
acquired), and an immature female (small size, mostly dark-appearing
bill with strong yellow suffusion to outer half). Also with this group
was a single HORNED GREBE. Lots of SURF SCOTERS on the lake, but not
much else of note.
Steve Rottenborn found a RED-THROATED LOON at Calero Reservoir this
morning, so I stopped by there over lunch. No luck with the loon, but
the adult BALD EAGLE was still perched in its usual spot (Steve saw it
there this morning as well). A few trees away was a perched immature
PEREGRINE FALCON. At least 45 COMMON MERGANSERS were on the reservoir
and 2 female BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS were with the blackbird flock at the
boat launch.
