Hey Folks
What excitement...again! I was working at the computer all day and
decided to head out to look at something more than 2 feet in front of my
face. I went to the Half Moon Bay gull flock in Venice beach at about 4pm
and by 4:20 or so I was looking at a second winter Slaty-backed Gull. This
has to be a different bird from the one Ron Thorn saw three weeks ago as his
bird was an adult. I have added it to a page I started last year on the
Slaty-backed Gulls in Half Moon Bay, it is the top bird.
http://www.coastside.net/chucao/gulls/Slatyback.htm
Given the age of this bird it either is a brand new bird which we have not
seen in Half Moon Bay or it is the first year bird I identified as a
Slaty-backed last year (controversial ID to say the least). I note on the
web page that I am impressed at how similar the structure of this second
year bird and the first year from last winter are.
Other interesting gulls present recently:
- Glaucous second cycle bird last Saturday Dec. 17 on our CBC.
- "Nelson's" Gull - Glaucous x Herring hybrid, one juvenile today Dec. 19.
- Glaucous or mostly Glaucous bird from a couple of weeks ago. Looks like a
second cycle Glaucous although a bit dark on the body and has dark eye and
dark bill tip. Not sure what to do with that one.
Info on Venice State Beach in Half Moon Bay is here:

That link includes aerial photos, maps (see the brochure) directions etc.
Happy gulling.
