[SBB] Charleston Slough

At noon today I went for a quick walk at Charleston Slough.  A WHITE-TAILED KITE hovered while TURKEY VULTURES circled above.  A GREAT BLUE HERON stood in the center of the island near the viewing deck, with BLACK-NECKED STILTS nearby.  CANVASBACKS were near shore, with their red eyes glistening in the sun.  Adobe Creek had NORTHERN SHOVELERS galore, PINTAIL, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS, GREAT EGRETS, SNOWY EGRETS, and numerous other birds.

The highlight was a stop at the forebay.  There were lots of CINNAMON TEAL and GREEN-WINGED TEAL, but I wanted to see a COMMON MOORHEN so I sat on the bench for a minute to look for one (and I did find one).  While scanning the perimeter, a SORA RAIL scooted along the edge of the water and pickleweek, with its yellow bill and cocked tail.  That made my day!

It's hard to believe it is December -- I didn't even need a jacket today!  Meanwhile my sister in snow-covered Northern Wisconsin has temperatures from 5 to 10 degrees.   Today is a beautiful day for a walk.   Wishing you good birding,
