Re: [SBB] Fwd: Sacramento/Out of Area

I'll continue the Sacramento update.

I too led a trip through the central Valley this weekend.  After we stopped for the Mountain Plovers and Ferruginous Hawks east of Fairfield we spent the weekend birding Colusa NWR, Sacramento NWR, LLano Seco Wildlife Area, Packer Unit Wildlife Area and Grey Lodge. We too enjoyed watching several Bald Eagles and even a Golden Eagle really stir things up at Sacramento NWR.

Blue morph geese were few to be found and only two were spotted.

Peregrine Falcon, Merlin, Prairie Falcon and American Kestrels all made an appearance over the weekend.

Yesteday while parked next to the Sacramento River on 45 (around 2:00 PM), north of Princeton and south of Four Corners we were thrilled to have a SWAINSONS HAWK fly over.

The skies were clear enough that even without your optics one could see both Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta - completely covered in snow.

Sacramento adventures continued:

Ted Chandik led a second section that birded these 2 areas this
weekend. We had better weather, less people but about the same number of
bird species seen. We saw 2 bitterns-one which I got pics of both "hiding"
in their traditional way http://www.pbase.com/image/53162395 and a shot of
him flying http://www.pbase.com/image/53162521 We also saw a prairie
falcon http://www.pbase.com/image/53162062 ,a barn owl and a bald
eagle. Very rewarding and well worth the trip to Sacramento
