I birded on the Guadalupe River trail this morning hoping to find Ann Verdi's Willow Flycatcher. No luck, but I did see a male Belted Kingfisher chasing another male downstream. He returned and chased a Coopers Hawk upstream from the dam at the water district. I was studying swallows overhead seeing mainly Tree Swallows with quite a few juveniles. A flock of a dozen or more Barn Swallows flew in and then 6 VAUX'S SWIFTS mixed it up until they all left suddenly. An adult Red shouldered Hawk took off after another hawk I didn't identify. One Yellow Warbler was chipping while gleaning eucalyptus leaves south of the dam. A Nutmeg Mannikin flew by and more were heard.
From inside the house I heard another newly fledged begging BROWN HEADED COWBIRD and went out to find a Cal. Towhee nearby. This continued until I was certain that it was indeed the towhee feeding the cowbird. The Hooded Oriole female, fledglings and juveniles are enjoying the figs and nectar feeder. The males have left. Lesser Goldfinch nesting in the eucalyptus tree finally fledged today.
