South Bay Birders,
This evening we had an immature male Black-chinned Hummingbird at our
feeders in Morgan Hill. I got pretty good video stills that I can e-mail to
anyone interested. This bird, which had 3-4 violet-colored spots on the
lower throat, was different from a female-type Black-chin (with no spotting
on the throat) we had here on 16-17 August 2005.
Black-chinned Hummingbirds are infrequently detected during migration (at
least, away from CCFS) in Santa Clara County, and there are relatively few
South County records. However, as we had one at our feeders about this time
last year (16 August 2004), now might be the time to check hummers at your
feeders for migrant Black-chins.
The female Costa's Hummingbird was present at our feeders 6-16 August 2005,
but we have not seen it since.
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
Morgan Hill, CA
