[SBB] Franklin's Gull (Sunnyvale WPCP)

Folks:

This morning, 8/21/2005, I visited the Sunnyvale WPCP to look for the FRANKLIN'S GULL. Initially, I found it a few hundred meters west of the central levee in the West Pond (between 0730 and 0800 hrs). I then walked back to the parking lot, and at the major pumping station where the central levees start, I was studying juvenile gull plumages when I realized that the Franklin's had moved into this group. Leaning against the rail here I had wonderful views of this small gull, feeding on "our" delectables.

Lots of swallows staging here: mostly Barn Swallows, but good numbers of Violet-green and Cliff swallows. I saw an adult GREEN HERON on my walk as well. There were many RED-NECKED PHALAROPE flying about. I counted 110 at one time in multiple flocks, but there may have been many more. Three EARED GREBES and 240+ NORTHERN SHOVELERS were harbingers of winter.

On leaving, David McIntyre, Kirsten Holmquist, Rich Page, and Frank Vanslager were walking out, hoping to also enjoy the Franklin's Gull show.
