[SBB] Violet-green Swallows

Hello SBBers,

Since about 1 August we've had an average of about 70 VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOWS hanging out on the power lines at the intersection of Church Avenue and De Paul Circle in San Martin (up against Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch Co. Park). They aren't present every day and there isn't any particular time of day. Just when we think they may have passed through, we see either the same group or a new group of about the same number.

It's interesting that the majority are likely this year's offspring because the white circle around the eye is quite smudged and they are very dull in color. Initially, until I got up close, I did not recognize exactly what type of swallow they were or if they were all the same species. There are definitely about 10-15% adults and young adults amongst them, but they are primarily this year's crop.

The typical VGSW distribution pattern in this area includes a very few in the Spring, which the aggressive resident Tree Swallows run off, and then a few low-key VGSW pass through during the fall after the nesting season has wound down. But this year, the numbers are strong and they are fully utilizing the local pond and bravely investigating natural and human-provided nesting sites. This could mean a territorial dispute next year!
