Naturalist literature shows these owls' varied behavior in migration and 
other movement, so fledgling dispersion may be either unpredictable, or we 
just don't know. In general, adult owls drive their offspring away from 
adult feeding territories and the young birds find their own.

I saw a lot of young snowy egrets at Shoreline in winter 2004-2005 after 
the first successful year of breeding at the Baylands egret rookery. 
Granted, egrets are much more communal. Shoreline and the Baylands are 
relatively big places though - one or two of the young burrowing owls will 
probably spread out and move in. The foothills aren't that far away either, 
and are abundant sources of prey. Everything I've read indicates dispersion 
is a dangerous time for naive young owls - some of the little guys probably 
won't make it.
