[SBB] 5-7 Aug 05

On Friday afternoon, 5 Aug 05, I saw an OSPREY over the CCFS waterbird pond.
The water level there is very nice right now for shorebirds, although I
didn't see anything unusual.

Saturday, 6 Aug 05, I visited the Palo Alto Baylands, where the heron
rookery is still operating. Quite a few nearly-grown SNOWY EGRETS were still
occupying the palm trees and some of the nests therein. A few GREAT EGRETS
are still about as well, including one fairly small individual that was on
the ground under the trees. It tried, unsuccessfully, to climb back into a
tree, but ended up remaining on the ground. There are still a handful of
young BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS in the trees around the ranger station, as
well. An immature COOPER'S HAWK was cruising the area while I was there, but
I didn't see it take anything.

On Sunday, 7 Aug 05, I went to the Sunnyvale sewage ponds to look for terns
and things. Only the usual terns were about, such as FORSTER'S and CASPIAN,
plus at least one LEAST TERN over salt pond A5 across the slough. An
immature TREE SWALLOW was here, exhibiting a dusky breast band that might
cause confusion with Bank Swallow. BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS are gathering in
large flocks here, with close to 200 birds present. Three BROWN PELICANS
flew by in the distance, while the salt ponds across the slough had large
numbers of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS.

An adult CALIFORNIA GULL with an injured left wing was walking around on the
levee and happened to be banded. It had 2 color bands on the right leg, one
of which was a light (perhaps faded) green, and the other was white. The
greenish band was nestled inside of the white band, so it was difficult to
say how they were initially applied. The left leg had a USFWS aluminum band
with the number 875-03137 on it.

When I was heading out to the ponds, I ran into a birder who said that she
had seen a White-faced Ibis fly by the old landfill before I arrived. So, on
the way out I went to the north end of the old landfill and checked out the
Lockheed ponds, finding a WHITE-FACED IBIS feeding there. Also present were
3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS and a GREEN HERON flyby along the channel.
