Hi SBBers,
The GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE, spotted by the Fly By Dawn birding group
yesterday, was still at the P.A.Baylands Duck Pond today (Sun. 4/24). I
first saw him at about 12:30 pm and was entertained by his antics and
vocalizations for the next 40 minutes or so. After he had a drink of pond
water he dissapeared. Hope he is ok.
A bizarre looking BLACK PHOEBE got my attention while I was following the
grackle around. At first glance it looked to be an all blackish and dark
gray Black Phoebe/fly catcher type. But wait, something was wrong.
Getting my scope on it I saw that all the breast and belly conture feathers
were missing. leaving a mottled dark gray look. I have not researched it
yet but presume this is an expamle where a female (would the male do this?)
plucks her feathers to line the nest. Maybe there is a brood patch issue
here also. The nest was near by and the adults were very busy supplying
food to the young. A one point the pair nearly collided while diving from
opposite directions for the same prey item on the ground.
