Hi Birders,
Ted Chandik's Fly By Dawn birding group got a real surprise yesterday at
the Palo Alto Duck Pond when we saw a Great-tailed Grackle walking in the
grass near the Snowy Egret/Black-crowned Night-Heron rookery. The grackle
flew from the grass into the eucalyptus trees just in back of the rookery
and began calling in G.T. Grackle fashion. Ted said grackles have nested in
Gilroy recently. We were wondering if this is a first sighting for Palo Alto.
Another birder who was photographing the rookery told us that the palm
trees in the rookery were first covered with herons but that the egrets had
forced most of them out into nearby trees.
The Bullock's Orioles at the end of nearby Geng Road were also putting on
quite a show. We saw one gathering bits of paper from the fence at the
athletic field for a nest, and there was some squabbling over nest sites.
There must be 10 or 12 individuals there; hard to tell how many. We saw one
Hooded Oriole female -- no males.
We had 92 species for the day, which started at Steven's Creek Park.
Good birding,
Nancy Teater
