On Saturday, 16 Apr 05, I took a hike with a friend in Henry Coe State Park,
going from the headquarters out to Manzanita Point and back. A HAMMOND'S
FLYCATCHER was along the Corral Trail, not too far from the headquarters, as
we started out. Also along the drainage of the Corral Trail were singing
TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, and a few WILSON'S WARBLERS.
HOUSE WRENS seemed to be singing in large numbers everywhere along the
route, as were BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS. On the Springs Trail we hit a small
flock of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS that included a singing NASHVILLE WARBLER. A
wet sedge area along this trail had a lingering LINCOLN'S SPARROW. A couple
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS and CASSIN'S VIREOS had arrived at various
locations. Single representatives of LARK SPARROW, WESTERN KINGBIRD, and
WESTERN TANAGER (male) were found, while the point itself had accumulated
its usual complement of BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS. A couple of CHIPPING
SPARROWS were singing at the bass pond on the point, while a silent one was
seen earlier along the trail. We also had an immature GOLDEN EAGLE soaring
overhead.
On Sunday, 17 Apr 05, I joined Gina Barton of SFBBO for a survey along
Gilroy Hot Springs Road in the south county. Not much in the way of unusual
birds or migrants - tons of HOUSE WRENS, WARBLING VIREOS, and BLACK-HEADED
GROSBEAKS. Lingering birds included GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS and a LINCOLN'S
SPARROW. A female COMMON YELLOWTHROAT along the creek seemed out of place. A
single male PURPLE FINCH was singing. We had about 8 or so WOOD DUCKS,
mostly paired up, and 2 pairs of COMMON MERGANSER. YELLOW-BILLED MAGPIES are
nesting at one location along Coyote Creek, as we saw birds and at least 3
nests in sycamore trees there.
