Since it's only a short walk from there to the pond, I did that twice Friday night. The second time was after 11 p.m, and I was treated to a Western Screech Owl barking and making its accelerating call from the far side of the pond. On Saturday, our hike at Skyline OSP revealed vocal Great Horned Owl and CA Thrashers way in the distance, from the chaparral area during twilight, but both Towhees were the first to start greeting the day. A Hutton's Vireo gave us a silent close look, and a young Gold Crowned Sparrow was well hidden atop a gray branch. Not far from Horseshoe Lake, I also heard one singing.
