Right off we had an OSPREY circling over the ponds as we were standing by the cars. A KILLDEER was heard calling but never showed itself. Then a BELTED KINGFISHER went by overhead. Two WHITE-TAILED KITES were perched out near the highway. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK flew into the trees near them. Walking along the fennel, we had numerous YELLOW WARBLERS and our first group of BUSHTITS. A BLACK PHOEBE called from the top of a tree. We were admiring a male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD when a female WOOD DUCK did a circle directly over us. A RED-TAILED HAWK associated for a short time with a couple of soaring TURKEY VULTURES. As we walked up the levy bounding the first northern pond, we had a couple of CASPIAN TERNS do an overfly, croaking to each other. Looking over the pond, we found a COMMON MERGANSER mixed in with a bunch of MALLARDS. Off by himself was a GREATER SCAUP. Both an OSPREY and an AMERICAN KESTREL were perched in the trees on the opposite side of the pond. GADWALL, PIED-BILL GREBES, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS inhabited the far end of the pond. A GREAT BLUE HERON took off and flew across the pond. Then, a GREEN HERON was found standing on the far side with a couple of COMMON MOORHENS cavorting (you know they do) nearby. We were about to continue when someone noticed a different looking cormorant. Our best conclusion was that it was a BRANDT'S CORMORANT. The bird had a slim all-dark head with a slim dark bill. Some people said they saw the tan cheek patches. I personally saw areas that looked only slightly less dark. No hint of a yellow in either the throat or the bill. Anybody who was there, feel free to chime in with observations. :-) In the shrubbery mixed in with a flock of BUSHTITS was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and what looked to be a hatch-year WARBLING VIREO. The vireo had a very pale, fuzzy appearance which made us think first year bird. On the path in front of us foraged a group of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS and a BEWICK'S WREN to be joined by a CALIFORNIA TOWHEE. As walked toward the corner of the pond, we picked up our first DOWNY WOODPECKER of the day. More YELLOW WARBLERS. A SAVANNAH SPARROW perched in some bushes long enough for several people to get a look. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS occasionally make their way out of the reeds. Ann Verdi picked up a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. Unfortunately, it flew off before anyone else could get a fix on it. Heading toward the south ponds back past the cars, we finally picked up a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE perching on some enclosures set around some young trees. A check of the creek yielded no Wood Ducks but did gain us our second DOWNY WOODPECKER for the day. The Bittern pond alas had no Bittern that we could see. However, we did see some AMERICAN WIGEON and a couple of immature PIED-BILL GREBES. Another GREEN HERON was on display to one side. A group of four SNOWY EGRETS squabbled amongst themselves along the edge of the reeds in the middle of the pond. A MARSH WREN called from the reeds as well as what sounded like a Sora Rail.
