I thought that might be the case before my original post based upon my look at Sibley, but did not think I had the experience to make that call. That is now my best guess. The clincher for me, in addition to my description below, is the dark brown fore-wing projected down along the side. The tips of the primaries were very black. I did not notice the tail as I should have. Gordon >This morning, Thursday, October 21, 2004, I saw what may simply be a >juvenile Bonaparte's Gull in the north pond of the flood control >basin between Embarkedero East and San Antonio off 101. It was >swimming with a Bonaparte's Gull with the dark ear spot, but the >bird in question was very brown on the cap, the back and sides of >the neck, much of the face, and the back, scapulars, and coverts. >The brown extended far down the shoulder toward the white breast. >It was picking food off the surface of the water like a Phalarope. > >I post this as an alert to better birders than I who may be able to >see this juvenile as a more unusual gull. > >Gordon > >Other birds seen: >Great Blue Heron >Great Egret >Northern Shovelor >Ruddy Duck >Red-Shouldered Hawk >Red-tailed Hawk >American Kestrel >American Coot >Bonaparte's Gull >Ring-Billed Gull >Anna's Hummingbird >Black Phoebe > >-- > >Gordon Barrett >[[email protected]] >_______________________________________________ >Do not post admin requests to the list.
