Hamilton. Birds were pretty much as expected. Arroyo Mocho was completely dry. I crossed over into the Colorado Creek drainage and found a good bit of water where the road crosses the creek. This was attractive to many wintering species. I had about seven LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES here and these were all I saw today. I also saw 10+ FOX SPARROWS, including Sooty, Slate-colored, and some intergrades. Of the Slate-coloreds I could study, all seemed to have bills of the size or smaller than the Sooties, so probably no Large-billed birds present. Most of the Slate-coloreds showed a fairly strong contrast between gray back and reddish wings and tail. At least one of these birds had red streaks/spotting on the breast rather than the expected dark coloration of typical Slate-colored. Streams in San Antonio Valley were mostly dry. I had a LEWIS'S WOODPECKER about a quarter mile south of the junction and three more birds at the Y-bar ranch entrance. Valley, blue, and scrub oaks all seemed to have a good acorn crop. An adult CHIPPING SPARROW was at the pond at the dogleg.\ Driving up the east side of Mt. Hamilton, I didn't see much color change yet in the black oaks. There was a fire over there this summer and a good bit of land north of the road and west of Isabel Creek has been burned.
