I walked around the Santa Clara County Water District Pond in Almaden 
Valley at 4 pm today and spotted an AMERICAN BITTERN at the south end of 
the pond. I had a nice side view of the bird at fairly close range. It's 
two months earlier than the one I found last year at this location. The 
more complex plumage is stunning.

Other birds seen include GREATER SCAUP, RUDDY DUCKS, PIED BILLED GREBES, 
DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANTS, GREEN HERON, SNOWY EGRET, BELTED KINGFISHER, 
SONG SPARROWS, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS AND MANY YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS.
