Another visit to the no-name pond at Gate 5, Monte Bello OSP, on Thursday
afternoon 10/7//2004 provided a couple of nice views of a Pileated
Woodpecker feeding among the several large firs closest to the pond to the
west (perhaps 200 yards from the pond). It was noisy whenever it changed
locations. After 1/2 hour, at about 5PM, it flew downstream for a long
distance to the stands of large firs down that way, giving flight calls
throughout its journey. 

Although a number of sneaky grassland sparrows were present, I was not able
to get satisfying looks at any of them on this visit.
