The Ruff spent a great deal of time with head totally submerged in the water. The bill is black, not orange as I expected from my Sibley, but the bill was surrounded by white as shown, and the legs are light yellow. It has a body as plump as the BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERs we saw today, but the head is smaller and the bill thinner and a bit longer. It was only my second siting, so it was a hard sell, and the experienced eyes were helpful. No help needed on the Roadrunner, seen at the entrance to the levy just beyond and to the right of the gate. I have chased this life bird for hours on three different days, but this time it gave me no time to park. We saw it from the van!
