My opinion is that it was a juvenile molting into adult plumage, as it was much more brownish and mottled than a crisply colored adult, yet had enough red in the right places - head, nape, breast - along with its white wing patch & rump, blackish back, etc., to be unmistakable as a Red-Breasted Sapsucker. Are there any statistics on this bird increasing or decreasing in Santa Clara Valley over the last 10-15 years?
