Our driver Kim Blythe had fog to contend with on the narrow winding road into the park. We envisioned birders with scopes focused on the crossbills when we arrived at Monument and Vista trail. We were the only three on that hill with so many pine trees, and none of us knew what a Ponderosa Pine looked like!! Dozens of Red-breasted Nuthatches and a few Hairy Woodpeckers sufficed until the noisy Red Crossbills finally flew in. The sun broke through the fog and we had great looks at two flocks containing at least 50 birds. Even a few Pine Siskins were seen and heard. Then a small flock of Cedar Waxwings flew into the tree with the Crossbills. A beautiful first year Golden Eagle was seen soaring overhead on the way back down the trail.
