Umunhum Road. Right out the car we had a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, HUTTON'S and WARBLING VIREOs, and an ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD. We walked out to Bald Mountain and on the north side we heard what to our untrained ears sounded like a MOUNTAIN QUAIL; the bird called for a few minutes, flushed, and was not seen or heard again. There were CALIFORNIA QUAIL in the vicinity. Walking back, about 100 yards short of Mt. Umunhum Road, we started hearing at least one BLACK-CHINNED SPARROW singing from the south slope. This was about 10 am and we heard occasional songs for the next 20-30 minutes but were unable to find the bird. After that we walked up Mt. Umunhum Road to the painted-on-the-road "no hikers" sign and again out to Bald Mountain. Except for the grasslands, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERs were everywhere. We saw a pair of PURPLE FINCHes and several ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERs. Roland Kenner _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
