Notable birds along the creek here were a NASHVILLE WARBLER, a group of about 8 WOOD DUCKS, and a COMMON MERGANSER. On Saturday, 1 May 04, I went up to Smith Creek with Gina Barton. We walked the hillside behind the fire station, where it seemed that the migrant makeup was pretty much limited to WESTERN TANAGERS. We had 8-10 on the hillside and a couple more along the creek. A flock of about 5-6 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS was at the creek crossing. A pair of CASSIN'S VIREOS had the female carrying nesting material (spiderweb). We had about 4-5 BROWN CREEPERS in this area, which seemed like a fairly high number. Moving back down into Hall's Valley, we stopped at the Grant Park visitor's Center, where a short walk up the Hotel Trail produced 3-4 singing GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS - some providing excellent views. Back at the picnic area outside the visitor's center, we had a pair of WESTERN KINGBIRDS flycatching off the fruit trees. A pair of LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH here had the male mate-guarding the female. After dropping Gina off, I went to the EEC in Alviso, where I had a flyover WESTERN TANAGER and a single RED-NECKED PHALAROPE on the salt pond. A BEWICK'S WREN was singing from the cottonwood strip.
