I had somehow got it in my head that all first winter Westerns were nearly uniformly dark gray, like this guy http://www.geocities.com/tgrey41/WesternGull1W.jpg so that any substantially light plumage indicated some GWGU background. Live and learn... I promise to continue the entertaining series of really dumb questions about immature gulls.
